ChessBuddy v.2.0

ChessBuddy is the world's first application that enables you to play chess against your phone. Because of the extremely efficient ChessBuddy Artificial Intelligence engine (SeeBay™ engine), ChessBuddy has fast response times in most game play situations, while keeping the game challenging. You can save up to 5 games, so if you're ever short of time, you can finish your games later. ChessBuddy has 4 levels of strength: easy, medium, hard and pro. But, it's not just the inside that's polished: have a look at the screenshots to see the beauty of the game. No doubt it will take everything possible out of your phone! From animated moves, to fast gameplay.
  • Unique ChessBuddy SeeBay Artificial Intelligence engine. SeeBay is extremely efficient, and was especially developed from the ground up for relatively low memory, low speed Java enabled devices such as the Motorola i95cl and T720. It's probably the only well playing chess engine in existence today capable of running on Java enabled handsets.
  • 4 levels of difficulty
  • Chess clocks
  • Game saving
  • Smoothly animated moves
  • No network connection necessary: the SeeBay? AI is built right into the program itself. Therefore you don't need a network connection in order to play chess on the phone.
  • Player switches on the side of the board, indicating who is the next player to move: the computer's switch will blink when it's thinking.
  • On-screen instructions
"The challenge was to build a very small chess engine that was efficient enough to run effectively on relatively slow mobile devices," he said. To meet those constraints, ChessBuddy's artificial intelligence brain was built from scratch and has fast response times in most game-play situations. The game's other assets, said van Suchtelen, are eye-grabbing color graphics and a user interface simple enough that even technophobes can enjoy it. The moves are animated, and switches on the side of the board indicate who has the next move. Chess clocks keep the game moving.
For most phones available; pretty expensive$10

Corner Rooks' Skirmish is a chess variant with a modified setup. It is a clear favorite among chess players wanting to improve their tactical play. All the pieces except the rooks are moved one square close to the opponent. The game is very tactical after a few moves and leaves no room for relaxed positional strategy-building play. http://www.jippii.fiMany phones supported; No idea how to get the files though$5

DeepPocket Chess v.2.2.3

The Deep Pocket Computer Chess Program is a complete chess program complying very tightly with FIDE rules of chess. It includes castlings, en passant captures, 100 non-capturing non-pawn half-move limit, selective promotions, and three recurrence rules.

By using its opening library, Deep Pocket teaches the player the names of the openings, providing a basis for further study.

Deep Pocket is recommended by the producer for all players ranging from first timers to club players. Extremely skilled players (ELO above 1800) may want to look elsewhere. The computational capacity of a mobile phone is not yet sufficient for master level chess. However, the authors of this game, even having written several computer chess programs, and having a daily dose of chess for a few years fully enjoy playing against Deep Pocket.

Numeric Garden's Deep Pocket Chess is a general computer chess program for MIDP devices. It allows you to play chess against your mobile phone, timepiece, or another MIDP enabled hand device. In addition to our Deep Pocket MIDP version, the company offers specialized versions for selected devices, including but not limited to Nokia 3410, 3510i, 6310i, 6800, 7210, 7650, 9210i, and Siemens M50.

Nine different levels of artificial intelligence provide a lasting gaming experience. A small opening library names the played opening for educational play. A carefully-tuned randomized element in the early play makes each game different.Nokia and Siemens M50; maybe others$5

Dr. Walker’s Chess v.2.6

  • Become a chess master, by playing single player and Challenging the chess brain, or choose multi-player. Select your skill level at any time during the game, from beginner to master. Play against the phone or somebody else
  • 4 Levels of game-play from beginner to expert
  • Quick responses in well under 1 second (level 1)
  • Deep level, strategic game-play (higher levels)
  • Advanced heuristics and a killer end-game
  • Automatic clocks
  • Undo last move cheat
  • Swap sides cheat
Level 1 is the easiest level. The phone doesn't look at very many moves before it decides which move to make, but it will not give its pieces away lightly so be careful. On this level the phone moves very quickly. Increasing levels get harder as the phone considers its options more carefully before deciding which move to make, so it takes progressively longer for it to move. Typically on a 7650 or 3650 the phone will respond in less than 1 second for level 1, less than 5 seconds for level 2, less than 30 seconds for level 3 and less than 2 minutes for level 4. The 7210 is roughly 5 times slower than this. There is, however, no maximum thinking time so in certain situations the phone may take a little longer. Some computer chess games will have a maximum thinking time but very often they will make a bad move just when the game is becoming interesting and challenging. This is very annoying so Dr. Walker's™ Chess does not do this.

When playing against the computer: 4 Levels of game-play from beginner to expert; Quick responses in well under 1 second (level 1); Deep level, strategic game-play (higher levels); Advanced heuristics and a killer end-game; Undo last move (cheat), Swap sides (during play)

3G-Scene's Einstein Challenger™ Chess is an online chess game that allows you to play your friends and other players globally, alternatively you can play against the phone with the games built-in artificial intelligence. Unlike most other chess games, Einstein challenger™ Chess' internal artificial intelligence does not "hand -limit" its own performance when pressed for time by a hard hitting opponent.
GPRS connectivity means that you can play anyone in the world, without incurring large line costs. Typically a game takes less than 10kBytes to play, which is a lot less than sending a photograph over GPRS.
Level 1 is the easiest level. The phone doesn't look at very many pieces before it decides what move to make, but it will not give its pieces away lightly so be careful. On this level the phone moves very quickly. Every chess rule is obeyed, including en passant!
Typically on a 6600 the phone will respond in less than 1 second for level 1, less then 5 seconds for level 2, less than 30 seconds for level 3 and less than 2 minutes for level 4. Chess strategy practice level.
www.symbian-game.com provides the backbone for registered players to play chess competitions online - including cash prize competitions!
Einstein Challenger is a work in progress. It currently works on the Sharp GX20 and Nokia 6600 and 3650. They intend to release versions for all the high-end phones. e.g. Sharp GX10, Nokia Series 60 handsets, Motorola V525, Ericsson T610 soon No download via PCna
